As you may know, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, your PC will still function; you'll just need to manage its security and efficiency on your own.
If you've tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered compatibility issues, don't worry—you still have several options:
- Ignore the Deadline: While not recommended, you can choose to continue using Windows 10 without support. This means you'll be responsible for your device's security and efficiency, as there will be no more updates to protect against cyber threats or maintain system performance.
- Switch to Linux: If you're tech-savvy and want to keep your PC, consider replacing Windows 10 with the Linux operating system. Be prepared for potential challenges during the transition.
- Upgrade Using a Technical Loophole: If your PC was deemed incompatible for an upgrade, you might still be able to upgrade it. ZDNET provides guidance on this process, which involves a minor registry edit and ensuring your PC uses Secure Boot with TPM. Note that proceeding with this method may result in your PC not being supported or eligible for updates, and any damages due to incompatibility won't be covered by the manufacturer.
- Purchase Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESUs): Microsoft will offer subscription-based ESUs for Windows 10 for up to three years. These updates are costly, with prices increasing each year. Business owners will pay $61 in the first year, $122 in the second, and $244 in the third. Educators receive a significant discount, paying $1, $2, and $4 for each respective year. Keep in mind, these updates do not include technical support, and you must purchase them consecutively.
- Buy a New PC: If your current device is aging, consider purchasing a new PC compatible with Windows 11. New computers generally offer better performance, enhanced security, and improved productivity. Remember to back up your data regularly to prevent any loss.
Evaluate these options carefully to determine the best course of action for your needs.
